Brain based strategies

BRAIN BASED ACTIVITIES

Brain Based Learning theory is based on the structure and function of the brain. As long as
the brain is not prohibited from fulfilling its normal processes, learning will occur. People
Often say that everyone can learn. Brain-Based Education is the purposeful engagement of strategies that apply to how our brain works in the Context of education.

DRAW IT

The brain responds best to visual content: of all the information it absorbs, around 80 to 90 percent is visual. Studies on memory have found that one of the easiest ways to ensure that learners store information in their long-term memory is to pair concepts with meaningful images. Visuals help people make sense out of the content and direct attention, increasing the possibilities that the learners will remember.

I conducted this activity in 9th standard where students were divided into groups one member from each group had to give a scientific concept for which the student from other group had to draw and the other group members have to guess the concept.
This activity helped students to visualize the different concepts by drawing on the chalk board

BOGGLE

Boggle is the classic word game where you try to find words

in a 4x4 or 5x5 grid of letters. Boggle is a very fun game to play.
I had distributed one copy of one of the boggle game pages and a pencil to each player. The students had to make as many words as they can by taking the letters which is provided in the grid.  The activity was timed for 5 minutes and students had to turn their page and count the number of words.

Less than 4 letters= 0 pts (invalid boggle word)
  • 4 letters = 1 pt
  • 5 letters = 1 pt
  • 6 letters = 2 pts
  • 7 letters = 3 pts
  • 8 letters = 5Pts
  • 9 letters or more = 11 pts
The students were asked to make words which were related to science lessons they had learnt in the semester, students found it very challenging and were very competitive to finish the task within the stipulated time.

WORD SEARCH

I had distributed a word puzzle based on topic Mixtures and separation of substances for the students of 8th standard, students had to mark the different words on the puzzle sheet which was provided to them. This activity was done in teams and the one who finished the puzzle quickest was awarded with a prize. The students were very enthusiastic and they had to literally scratch their brain to complete this puzzle. It was a very good activity for students to improve their scientific vocabulary.

KWL CHARTS

K-W-L charts are graphic organizers that help students organize information before, during, and after a unit or a lesson. They can be used to engage students in a new topic, activate prior knowledge, share unit objectives, and monitor students’ learning.
I had taught the lesson on gravitational force for students of 9th standard and I had explained students at the beginning of the class how to make a KWL chart. In KWL K stands for what students already know about the topic being taught, so they filled the column K with what they knew about gravitational force. The W column was to be filled during the progress of lesson as to what questions they have in their mind about the topic which will be fulfilled after teaching of the concept, the L column is to be filled after the lesson is taught and they had to fill in details of what they learnt.
Students completed this task and they really found it helpful for revising the lesson later on. It also made the students aware of how much knowledge they are possessing. The students become active learner
